Carrots

Garden Help > Vegetables

carrots

Carrots are a root vegetable that grow well in the spring or fall. They require loose, fine soil for straight, unforked roots.

Cultural tips for growing carrots, UC IPM

Planting

  • Prepare soil so it is fine and lump-free to prevent misshapen roots.
  • Direct seed in the spring February to April, possibly in May, or in the fall in September.
  • Cover seeds lightly and keep moist.
  • Once seedlings emerge, thin to 1 to 2 inches apart.
  • Transplanting is not recommended because it typically results in forked or misshapen roots.

Harvesting

  • Harvest when good sized but still tender.
  • Can be stored in the ground during the cool season for harvesting as needed.
  • If left in the ground too long, they may get woody or bolt (send up a flower stalk).
