The schedule for the UC Davis Department of Entomology and Nematology's online spring seminars has been announced by coordinator Ian Grettenberger, Cooperative Extension specialist and assistant professor. All seminars will be held on Wednesdays at 4:10 p.m. (Pacific).

Insect physiologist Swapna Priya Rajarapu, a postdoctoral research scholar in the Dorith Rotenberg laboratory at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, will present the next seminar hosted by the UC Davis Department of Entomology and Nematology.

Hello, spring! It's not "officially" spring until we see--and photograph--the spectacular Western tiger swallowtail, Papilio rutulus. One landed March 30 on an aromatic white lilac bush in Alamo Creek Park, Vacaville. It lingered long enough for a few photos and then fluttered away.

You've heard of "bats in the belfry," right? Well, how about "bees in the bell tower"? The Epiphany Episcopal Church of Vacaville, Calif., has just that: bees in its bell tower. (See Bug Squad blog, Blessed Are the Bees.

With apologies to grammarians everywhere, the mulch/bee dilemma is a question I often receive. Many bee gardeners know that 70 percent of California native bees nest underground, and that access to bare soil is needed for nest building.

Blessed are the bees. When honey bees swarmed last week at the entrance to the Epiphany Episcopal Church in Vacaville, the site seemed quite fitting. Biblical references to bees and honey, such as "the land of milk and honey," abound. Blessed are the bees.
