About the Event
Program: Late winter is a great time to prune deciduous trees. It's the time of year when we really notice our deciduous trees, either the silhouette of their branches or the buds getting ready to open. This class will focus on how the biology of deciduous trees differs from evergreen trees. We will talk about how common deciduous species and families found in our area respond to pruning. We'll discuss how the timing of pruning affects the growth of deciduous trees, and the all-important sprout management! As with all types of trees, we will talk about avoiding unnecessary pruning by defining our human-centric pruning goals and balancing them with what trees need for health and stability.
Speaker: Ellyn Shea is a Certified Arborist, Certified Tree Risk Assessor, Registered Consulting Arborist, gardener, and garden coach. She collaborated with Dr. Larry Costello (UC Environmental Hort Advisor emeritus) on the 2012 instructional video, Training Young Trees, available on YouTube and has been used in Master Gardener courses. She is also the originator of Arboriculture Boot Camp, a workshop series designed in preparation for a Certified Arborist examination or for professional development. Some say she has too many houseplants.
