Current weather conditions are ideal for mushrooms, the fruiting bodies of specific fungi, to sprout in the garden. Fungi are a natural part of the landscape. Most fungi are beneficial as they decompose dead and dying plant matter as well as create symbiotic relationships with other plants. Some fungi, such as armillaria root rot (oak root fungus), are pathogens and can harm plants. For more information on beneficial fungi and removing those that might be harmful, see these garden notes.
