Welcome!
We are so pleased that you have decided to lead the UC 4-H Disease Detectives Project. This project was designed to be delivered virtually for youth 12 years and older. There are 8 lessons, plus an orientation that will take approximately 60 minutes each to complete. The project will help youth learn about disease outbreaks, virus transmissions, public health investigations and how protective actions like hand washing, wearing masks, vaccinations, and herd immunity help manage negative public health outcomes. As the bases of this project we use The Junior Disease Detectives Operation: Outbreak graphic novel, developed through a CDC, USDA, and 4-H collaboration.
To deliver this project virtually, we recommend the use of Zoom. Please refer to UC 4-H policies for information and tips. The following link provides information, tips, and UC 4-H policies when using this on-line platform:
This website outlines materials used during each group meeting for both the educator and the participant. The tabs on the left which are open access, guide youth week by week through the activities and assignments. The links below provide the educator lesson plans for you to use each week.
These materials were quickly developed for a fast roll out after the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic. As such, they are not professionally designed. Please excuse the rough format, but expendecy was critical to reaching our members. They are currently being field tested, which means you are the first leaders to teach this (besides us). We would really like your feedback on these lesson plans. Please insert comments throughout, with ideas and improvements for us to consider. Then email them to ca4h@ucanr.edu. Thanks for your help in “making the best better”!
