YouTube Best Practices

Best practices for UC ANR branded YouTube accounts. UC ANR uses YouTube to share research highlights, educational series, workshops, and community programs. For account setup requirements and registration, see Guidelines and Policies for Branded UC ANR Accounts.

Set Up Your Account

  1. Create a Google account specifically for UC ANR to keep the YouTube channel separate from personal accounts.
  2. Go to YouTube and create a Brand Account under your Google account. A Brand Account allows multiple users to manage the channel without sharing passwords.
  3. Customize your channel — add a profile picture using the UC ANR logo, write a channel description explaining your mission and content types, and add links to your website and social media accounts.

Assign at least two team members as backup account admins. Then register your new account.

Best Practices

  • Hook viewers early. Capture attention in the first 10–15 seconds with an interesting fact, question, or visual.
  • Keep videos structured and concise. Organize with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Break longer videos into chapters or segments.
  • Use high-quality audio and visuals. Good lighting and clear sound improve engagement.
  • Optimize for search. Include relevant keywords in titles, descriptions, and tags. Use playlists to organize content.
  • Make content accessible. Add captions to all videos and include descriptions for visual content. Follow accessibility best practices.
  • Encourage engagement. Ask viewers to like, comment, share, and subscribe. Respond to comments to build community.
  • Post consistently. A regular upload schedule improves discoverability and audience retention.
  • Monitor and adapt. Track watch time, audience retention, and traffic sources. Use insights to refine content.
