4-H is a youth development program serving young people ages 5–18 through hands-on, experiential learning. The program welcomes youth members and adult volunteers from all backgrounds and communities.
We welcome youth ages 5 to 18 and adult volunteers to join and become part of the largest youth development program in the nation. California 4-H is delivered in every county through University of California Cooperative Extension offices.
4-H helps young people to reach their full potential as competent, confident, leaders of character who contribute and are connected to their communities.
In 4-H, youth design and participate in their own programs and activities. This unique learn-by-doing model teaches essential skills that youth will use throughout their lives, such as identifying sparks, desiring knowledge, setting goals, self-reflection, adapting to new situations, communicating, and responding to the needs of others.
Whether youth are building rockets, raising companion dogs, or planting vegetables, 4-H gives young people the skills they need to thrive and succeed throughout their lives.
Nevada County supports nine 4-H clubs, a thriving summer camp program, more than 100 adult volunteers, and nearly 400 youth members. Volunteer leaders provide educational and leadership opportunities for youth throughout the county.
Who Can Join?
4-H is open to:
- Youth ages 5–8 (Primary members)
- Youth ages 9–18 (Regular members)
- Adults who want to serve as volunteers
No previous experience is required; Families from all backgrounds are welcome.

Why 4-H
History
For more than 100 years, 4-H has provided youth with educational programs that promote personal growth and leadership development.
Learning environment
4-H creates positive learning environments where youth explore new ideas, develop skills, and discover areas of interest. Research demonstrates that engaged, self-directed learning strengthens outcomes for young people.
Lasting impact
The 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development, conducted in partnership with Tufts University, followed more than 7,000 youth across 42 states.
Findings show that 4-H participants demonstrate stronger leadership, public speaking skills, higher educational aspirations, and increased interest in STEM fields compared to their peers.
