Agronomy Crops

Agronomy Crops Program

The Agronomy Crops Program provides science-based, unbiased information to growers, crop consultants, and related stakeholders in Yolo, Solano, and Sacramento counties. The program aims to support informed decision-making and address practical questions in agronomic cropping systems.

Field crops are an important part of agriculture in the Sacramento Valley. Small grains (e.g., wheat, barley, oats, triticale), seed crops (e.g. sunflower), and other crops such as corn, safflower, dry beans, and alfalfa are major rotational crops in the region. In 2023, these field, forage, and seed crops covered more than 200,000 acres across the three counties and had a combined gross value of more than $214 million.

Program Focus

The program focuses on extension education and applied research around issues directly connected to local production challenges. This includes weed control, insect pest management, nutrient management, input-use efficiency, variety selection, and other questions that affect crop yield, production efficiency, and profitability.

Research is mostly conducted in collaboration with growers, UC specialists, and UC Cooperative Extension advisors. Research findings and relevant information are shared through newsletters, blog posts, presentations, field meetings, farm calls, and one-on-one conversations.
