Creative Expression & Communication

Creative expression includes all the different ways you can express yourself:

  • Visual arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, photography)
  • Performing arts (dance, theater, music, presentations)
  • Literary arts (writing, poetry, storytelling)
  • Crafts (handmade objects, textiles, pottery)
  • Digital arts (graphic design, digital illustration, video creation)

Through creative expression, you can share ideas, thoughts and feelings. It helps you understand yourself better and connect with others.

The types of projects available vary by county.

Contests

We support giving youth opportunities to improve and compete at the county, regional, state and national levels.

County and State Fashion Revue

Categories for competing in Fashion Revue can vary from year to year, but include many options for creative expression! Competitors who qualify at their county and regional Fashion Revue can enter the State Fashion Revue contest. Seniors at the State Fashion Revue can qualify to compete at the national Fashion Revue competition in Texas.

State Photography Contest

With the increased use of smartphone cameras, there are many opportunities for 4-H'ers to capture the perfect photo. Our state Photography contest has evolved to accept digital photos for entry.

County, Regional & State Presentations

Public speaking continues to be a cornerstone of the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program. Over the 120 years of California 4-H, the presentation program has expanded to include various public speaking formats. Presentation contests at the county and Regional levels prequalifies you to compete at State Presentations.

California 4-H alumni often mention that they learned how to speak more effectively through their participation in 4-H presentations.
