Growing Natives in Containers
About the Event
Program: Learn how to create a small habitat of California native plants, even if you have limited garden space. By planting native plants in containers, you can enjoy the presence of birds, butterflies and other native pollinators while adding beauty and interest to your patio, deck or entryway. The presentation will introduce you to some of the reasons to grow natives, share examples of local natives that lend themselves well to container planting, and provide information about types of containers, potting mixes, and care and watering.
Speakers: Bonnie Marks has been a Marin Master Gardener since 2017. She lives in San Rafael, where she grows edibles on hillside terraces and in raised containers. She has planted native plants in the areas surrounding the vegetable garden to attract pollinators and support biodiversity.
Mamie Yee has been a Marin Master Gardener since 2017, in the same class as Bonnie. She grows vegetables in raised beds and berries and fruit trees in other parts of her garden. She also maintains a large native plants garden for its beauty and biodiversity.
