Santa Monica Mountains Fund Native Plant Nursery
4121 Potrero Road, Newbury Park, CA
Come learn about and get hands-on practice in the propagation and production of local native plants for urban and wildland restoration projects. Activities focus on a few specific plant species each week and will vary by season. Activities may include:
- Preparing and sticking plant cuttings
- Transplanting young rooted cuttings into containers
- Learning, mixing, and applying various soil mixes and fertilizers
- Cleaning recent conservation seed collections
- Counting and treating and preparing seed for sowing
- Transplanting delicate native plant seedlings
The Nursery became a Ventura County-approved Master Gardener site in June 2023.
Volunteer Work Days: Thursdays from 9:00 AM–12:00 PM (noon)
Native Plant Propagation Thursdays include Ventura County Master Gardeners and public volunteers from the Santa Monica Mountains Fund (SAMO Fund). The role of Master Gardeners at this site is to be trained in the methods of propagation and production of native plants. Once trained, Master Gardeners will expand the diversity and quantity of plants grown at the nursery. These plants are used in restoration and distributed at public events throughout the county. Master Gardeners share leadership roles in propagation and production at the nursery.
The Santa Monica Mountains Fund's daily mission is to support native plant conservation in the Santa Monica Mountains while welcoming the public to learn and grow.
The Santa Monica Mountains Fund works to protect and encourage appreciation and understanding of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The Fund achieves this by supporting National Park Service efforts in education, science, research, improved facilities, citizen engagement, stewardship, and philanthropy.
