At the Edge of Spring

Blog by Patti Brantley

For a while, we observe the garden and it’s quiet. Not empty, just quiet.

As you look out your window or walk through, you don’t see any changes. Gardeners are used to change. We want it. We embrace it. But for a while, there is just stillness.

Until one day, something is different. As you move past, you notice a tiny bud. A hint of green shows at the soil’s surface. A hummingbird flashes by and draws your attention to an early bloom.

The garden is beginning to waken. This is the edge of Spring.

You pause and absorb it silently. Anticipation grows. We are eager to begin preparing, digging, improving, sowing. While our hearts say seize the day, our experience says, wait…have patience.

Instead, we begin to notice.

Notice the way the light is changing, how some plants shoot up right away, and others take time to push through. The soil is warming. There is a subtle shift in energy. Those early blossoms, visible proof of work happening below the surface.

This is the edge of Spring.
