Nutrition Policy Institute researcher Ron Strochlic will retire from the University of California on July 1, 2026. Strochlic began his UC career at the UC Berkeley Center for Weight and Health in January 2012 and in 2015, he and other staff transferred to NPI, one year after it was founded. In his 14-year tenure with UC, Strochlic has contributed to numerous projects to support improved food security, nutrition, and health for California’s most vulnerable communities, including farm workers, low-income California families, and incarcerated individuals. His expertise in California agriculture and food systems has proven invaluable, notably by his support or leadership of projects including evaluations of California’s Harvest of the Month program for schools, evaluating California farm worker health and food insecurity, establishing the business case for improved farm labor conditions, promoting California farmers markets to growers and increasing access to them for low-income consumers and CalFresh shoppers, and evaluating school districts serving as local food distribution hubs. Strochlic’s final project at NPI focused on increasing access and consumption of California-grown fruits and vegetables in the California corrections system through Farm to Corrections, a pilot project that began in 2023 with three California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitations facilities participating and which leaves a lasting impact as it recently expanded to include all facilities as of March 2026.
