Good general advice in the cited links. However, I no longer use open center on any trees I grow in the Sacramento Valley as it is too hot and sunny. Even with being painted, I have lost trees or major branches due to several sunburn (in 2022 especially but also in prior summers). My central leader and modified central leader trees (with branches shading the main trunk) have not burnt except near the crown if I had taken off to many tower branches to prevent fruit from laying on the ground. Many thanks to Don Shor at Redwood Barn Nursery and folks at Peaceful Valley Farm Supply for pointing me toward the modified central leader training for most fruit trees
