Explore, Learn & Connect: 2026 4-H Range and Mustang Camp

Research shows that learning outside of the classroom is a great way for young people to grow their interests and learn to take care for nature and protect it for the future. The northeast California 4-H and University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) staff are at it again, expanding outdoor opportunities for youth! They are partnering to expand the Mustang Camp into a three-day, two-night Range and Mustang Camp, August 6-8, 2026. This camp will serve as the California state Range Camp through the CalPac section of the Society for Range Management. You won’t want to miss this!

Learn at Camp

We split the camp into two groups for learning – an introduction and advanced group.

Learn about managing public lands, rangelands, wild horses, and burros.

  • Take a deeper look at the relationship between healthy lands and healthy horses.
  • Participate in the Mustang Camp curriculum to learn about managing wild horses on the range and in holding facilities.
  • Get close-up experience at a Bureau of Land Management Wild Horse Facility and see wild horses out on rangelands.

New this year - learn about natural resource career opportunities such as forestry, soils and hydrology.

About Camp

We are moving camp to Blue Lake Camp in the Modoc National Forest. This new location allows you to participate in traditional camp experiences such as swimming, canoeing, and s’mores - along with making lifetime camp memories.

We accept all 4-H youth ages 9-18 but please note that curriculum and educational materials are for intermediates (ages 11-13) and seniors (ages 14-18). You will have a better experience if you are comfortable with a sleep-away camp for two nights.

Camp is limited to 25 youth total. Make sure you enroll as soon as possible to secure your spot. Cost is $125 per camper. Cost includes all meals from lunch on Thursday, August 6 to lunch on Sunday, August 8. Housing will be in bunk houses. Plan on bringing a sleeping bag or bedding (e.g., sheets, pillow, blanket). If you are not already a 4-H member the camp fees will cover your 4-H registration for the 2026-27 program year.
