ARC of Ventura - Ojai
ARC-Ojai Enrichment Center
210 Canada Street, Ojai, CA
The ARC-Ojai Enrichment Center is an adult day program that serves adults with developmental disabilities. The Master Gardener public outreach efforts at this site include a lecture series covering topics such as orchard pruning, building raised beds, insect control, tomato propagation, and winter gardening. The lecture series also offers presentations by guest speakers. As an example, in May 2016, the Master Gardeners partnered with the Casitas Water District to address drought conditions and the orchard management challenges they caused. In the future, Master Gardeners plan to work with the City of Ojai to be included in Ojai's annual Garden Tours.
The UC Master Gardener program at the ARC began in the early 1990s. At that time, the only garden at the site was the orchard. With Charles Duncan leading the effort, the orchard has been revitalized. Weeding, mulching, pruning, and other care have transformed the neglected grove into a thriving, productive orchard. Today, the orchard is treated with a horticultural vinegar solution as a science-based method to control weeds.
Pat Neff is an ARC staff member who has worked with Charles Duncan. She has seen how the orchard has improved with the help of the Master Gardeners program and feels it has greatly enhanced the appearance of the center.
The Master Gardeners working at this center are recognized by local citizens as a dynamic part of the community. Native plant landscaping, developed by Master Gardeners in partnership with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, graces the front entrance of the center. At various locations within the center, there is an edible garden, garden art, and a greenhouse. The Master Gardeners have built raised beds with irrigation, giving ARC clients an opportunity to grow their own fruits and vegetables.
